‘Dexter’ spin-off rumors, controversial ending still the talk of Showtime TCA
We wonder how long it is going to be before Showtime eventually escapes from the shadow that was “Dexter.” This is a series that they technically know quite a bit to, given that it helped to put them on the map when it comes to creating original drama series.
Therefore, you really would have hoped that they would have stuck the landing rather then giving us an incomplete and nonsensical ending that didn’t suit the show at all. Were it not for the “How I Met Your Mother” finale, it’d be in the #1 position by a mile as the worst series finale of the past year. It may still be to some.
Another thing to consider here is that most talk of a spin-off for the show ended with this controversial finale, and hasn’t really come back since. While President David Nevins was asked about it today while at the TCA Summer Press Tour, he said that there have been zero discussions on the subject. At this point, it’ll probably remain that way unless everyone really tries to fix the way that the show ended off. We would in a way be interested in a show called “Dexter: Redemption” where the entire story revolves around the attempt by Dexter and the show to write as many wrongs from that finale as possible. They cannot bring back Deb from the dead, but they can at least try to make the story make sense.
For the record, Nevins also made it clear that there was never really any creative discussion about killing the character at all … at least among the current team in power:
“No one pitched the idea of killing Dexter. Neither Michael [C. Hall] nor the producers thought that was the appropriate ending.”
