‘America’s Got Talent,’ ‘Last Comic Standing,’ and ‘American Ninja Warrior’ renewed
Good news if you’re enjoying most of the summer programming that NBC is putting out there right now: The trio of “America’s Got Talent,” “Last Comic Standing,” and “American Ninja Warrior” have all now been officially renewed for more seasons by NBC.
When it comes to the first one, there is definitely no surprise here. This is the network’s flagship summer show, and while it has serious problems (rampant product placement, too many singers), it is still better than some other talent competitions out there. Plus, it at least gives a voice to the other variety acts.
Meanwhile, “American Ninja Warrior” has proven to be the sleeper gift that keeps on giving. We remember years ago watching the Japanese version on G4, never really thinking that the show could translate over to NBC while still having the same sort of serious premise to it. It has, and there are routinely great ratings when you consider that this show cannot have a particularly enormous budget.
Finally, we have the surprise of the trio to us. “Last Comic Standing” has not received the best ratings in the world, so this is a commitment more to a show that has just been entertaining and is a good launching pad for the network to farm out some talent. Next season, they will hopefully be helped by us and everyone else knowing in advance just what the format for the show now is supposed to be. We imagine neophytes to the franchise this time being very confused about everything.
