‘Last Comic Standing’ review: Rod Man, Nikki Carr try to impress Ellen
Tonight’s new episode of “Last Comic Standing” brought us Ellen DeGeneres, crazy standup, and Monroe Martin trying to patent a new dance. Did someone tell him that these were fake talk-show segments?
Anyway, this episode was mostly a very good time save for some of the editing. For example, it was obvious from the beginning that Nikki Carr would at least get a sit-down with Ellen after gushing about her before doing the pre-interviews. Also, we figured that Rod Man ultimately won the challenge thanks to him being able to go last. Going last for the most part on this show is a luxury. We overall did like the premise of this challenge very much, since this is something that many comics do on a regular basis. Also, the producers probably want to see who is relatable to the common person if they’re going to give the winner a talk show. This is a nice test for that, and Rod Man was the right winner (though Nikki did a good job, and Monroe Martin spent way too much time with that patented dance).
As for the comic showdown, it was easy to see Lachlan Patterson getting put up there. He’s one of the younger comics, and there’s always this “prove yourself” mentality when you are a part of this show. The moment we saw him up against the very-funny DC Benny, though, we felt immediately like he was in trouble. Somehow, he did pull it out, though, thanks to a genuinely funny set that had tons of energy and was stuffed full of twists. To be honest, we were prepared to come on here and say that Lachlan’s experience on the West Coast and with those crowds was a big advantage for him, but he did well enough on his own that he doesn’t need an asterisk attached to his name.
Overall, we just wish every episode was of this format, just so we could have the random challenges plus some standup at the end. It’s a nice mix, and this is the part of the show that we’ve always known and loved. Grade: B+.
