‘Sherlock’ season 4: The tabloid chatter begins already for Martin Freeman’s new role
While being a television star obviously has many perks, we imagine that there must also be a part of it that gets rather annoying in terms of all the sudden, excess attention that is dolled on you that was not there previously.
When you go to the theater, this is even riskier given there is always a chance that your star power alone will overshadow others. So when “Sherlock” star Martin Freeman took to the stage for a new adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Richard III,” the tabloids were quick to jump all over the idea that his presence created a massive hullabaloo that “ruined” the experience for some people. Why were these rumors started? Our basic explanation for it is that the tabloids were probably very bored, and therefore could not think of anything better to do right now than stir up trouble.
Unfortunately for them, the problem that they are running into is that one of the men behind the production is actually speaking out to say that much of this nonsense talk is strictly that. In a series of posts on Twitter, the play’s director Jamie Lloyd had the following to say about some overzealous “Sherlock” fans getting carried away during performances:
“The stories going around about young Martin Freeman fans clapping and cheering at inappropriate moments in #RichardIII are totally UNTRUE…A few people clapped after the first scene during the first preview. It is not unusual for an audience to clap during scene changes…It has never happened since and has been completely overblown. Ridiculous. The standing ovations have been instant & from young & old alike.”
One other reason we rolled our eyes at these rumors to begin with is strictly because “Sherlock” fans tend to come across as some of the classiest ones out there. If they are celebrating anything right now, it is the fact that filming for a Christmas special and then a fourth season will be taking place next year.
