‘Last Comic Standing’ videos: Alingon Mitra, Jimmy Shubert face off in Comic Comeback
Now that we understand the somewhat-convoluted premise behind NBC’s “Last Comic Standing: Comic Comeback,” it’s a little easier to discuss it. Basically, America will vote on their favorite comic every week, with the winner facing off against the next eliminated comic. It’s like “Top Chef: Last Chance Kitchen” but with fan support. The winner will not return to the competition, but can at least get an opportunity to perform at the finale.
Alingon Mitra apparently won the vote last week, and thanks to that he and Jimmy Shubert (who was picked by the audience as better than Aida Rodriguez) are currently doing battle. Here’s our take.
Jimmy Shubert – His whole “airports are terrible” bit is completely overdone, even if there were some funny jokes about getting felt up at TSA. Jimmy is probably the mainstream one of the two who could go on some comedy show and appeal to people all over the country. He’s very old guard in that way, but also somewhat generic when it comes to his humor. The best line in here is the very-true comment about spam filters at the beginning.
Alingon Mitra – The man told jokes about Pluto and Goofy both being dogs, not wanting to write people ever again after he makes spelling mistakes, and also the name “Rufio” from “Hook.” The fact that he went on a whole nerdy tirade here is a comic going after our attention, and we appreciate that. The negative here is that we could see some more conservative viewers who may think that his whole sexual assault estimate story was a little too edgy.
Personally, we’d pick Alingon just because we feel like he put himself out there more. There is merit to what Jimmy did, but you really have to be into that sort of comedy.
As of right now, Alingon is winning with around 57% of the vote … but we still hate that Twitter is the primary voting mechanism given that there are plenty of “Last Coming Standing” viewers out there who are not on it.
