‘NCIS’ season 12: Michael Weatherly and anticipation

Weatherly -The past month and a half has felt like almost a full year when it comes to the lack of “NCIS” news. The writers have been very quiet during the process of coming up with new scripts, and we can describe our feelings about that in one word: Bummer.

Will a new photo from Michael Weatherly help? Maybe, since it should at least put a smile on your face. The man behind Tony DiNozzo posted the image attached here to his Twitter, along with the caption of “Looking at season 12… With clear eyed optimism. Prediction: outside the box #12.” First of all, we love how this show almost feels like science fiction; also, isn’t it nice to be optimistic. Season 12 filming starts not too long after the 4th of July per some of the latest information we’ve seen, and Michael will be of course a huge part in that.

What we expect from Tony (and really most of the longtime cast members) is something that was in “The Admiral’s Daughter” and other late season 11 episodes: Personal stories that give the actors a chance to show off their considerable skills, and also maybe a few long-term plots so that there is something to look forward to down the line. The problem with season 11 at times, just from a structural standpoint, was that there were so many changes that it was difficult for the team to find its footing. We don’t really feel like it started to get there completely following the arrival of Bishop until three or four episodes until the finale.

One other thing we’d want to address, mostly because we’ve seen it on Twitter pretty much the past three weeks, is the abundance of “new stories” claiming that Cote de Pablo is coming back to the show. News flash: The majority of them aren’t new, and are just quoting interviews that happened at around the time of the finale. There has been zero new information on that front that we find credible. We will of course let you know if there is anything new to report there in the event it happens, but we suggest for now going back and looking at what we said in our longer Q&A piece from early this month.
