‘Better Call Saul’ renewed already for season 2; show premiere pushed to 2015

Better Call Saul season 1With “Better Call Saul” today, there is definitely a mixture of both good news and bad.

The bad news is here is something that many out there saw coming, given the reported production delays to the show and the original air date being so late as it was in May. AMC has decided to push back the start of the series until January 2015, which means that there will be no Saul Goodman for the rest of the year. We’re fine with this, given that with expectations here through the roof, the last thing you want to do is create a letdown after “Breaking Bad.”

As for the good news … there are already 23 episodes in total ordered! AMC already had ten episodes slated for the first season, and they have just confirmed an order of 13 more for a second season in 2016. We almost hope that the show only lasts for around this long, given that a prequel really should not stretch anywhere near as long as the original show. (Granted, our opinion that changes if we get to see some of what Saul’s life is like after he changed his identity on the flagship show.)

In a statement, AMC head Charlie Collier of course is more than thrilled about the prospects this show has:

“Production on Better Call Saul is underway and we could not be more proud of nor more excited about the work to date … When introducing any series, especially one with the DNA of Breaking Bad, there are countless factors to consider in making sure the show gets the launch it deserves. We have a strong history with Vince, Peter, Bob, the studio… and all share a focus on making it a true television event. No half measures.”

First of all, great pandering in this statement by Collier. Also worth noting here is that Vince Gilligan (the genius behind “Breaking Bad”) is directing the pilot, and he has been appointed co-showrunner now along with the Saul character’s creator Peter Gould. This is big, given that Gilligan originally was going to have a smaller role so that he could pursue some other things.

Are you excited by this news? Bummed that you’ll have to wait longer? Either way, share below.
