‘Game of Thrones’ season 5 spoilers: Lena Headey’s Cersei front and center
What will “Game of Thrones” do early on in its fifth season? The one thing that we hope they don’t do, at least right away, is plug some sort of time jump in there. That would deprive us of one of the show’s most-interesting moments, and that is seeing Cersei completely go ballistic when she realizes that her brother Jaime let Tyrion Lannister go. (We imagine that she won’t be nearly as distressed about the death of Tywin, even if that does throw more of the kingdom into chaos.)
While Alex Graves, who directed the season 4 finale “The Children,” does not have too much of an understanding yet about what showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have planned for season 5, he told The Hollywood Reporter that there is specifically a great interest on his part to see what becomes of this Cersei story now that the entire fabric of the character has been torn:
“Lena [Headey] is such a brilliant actor that I’m really into seeing what she’s going to do next. But also, you saw the finale last night. What do you think is going to happen when Cersei wakes up? Jaime set Tyrion free and he killed her father on the way out. She is going to be really pissed off. I don’t think I’m giving up anything if you think about what Cersei wakes up to in the morning.”
As distressed and betrayed as she might be in regards to Tyrion’s escape, the interesting thing now is that she may be one of the two people who gains the most from Tywin’s death. Now, she and Margaery are in the driver’s seat when it comes to controlling King Tommen and in turn the Seven Kingdoms, but we cannot imagine either one is going to relent control to the other easily. There are also a few other tricksters still out there, but the fear that these people should all have is that their entire kingdom is extremely vulnerable now in the event that Stannis, Dany, or someone else attacks.
