‘Game of Thrones’ season 4 finale: Charles Dance on Tywin’s toilet surprise

Tywin -Isn’t that a title that you never thought you would see associated with “Game of Thrones“? Unless you were a fan of the George R.R. Martin books, a character like Tywin Lannister dying on the toilet is probably not something that you would have envisioned. It was a dark moment for the Tyrion character, and also humorously a first real look at where the richer folk in King’s Landing use the restroom.

For Charles Dance, this caps off a fantastic run as the real villain of this story, given that he was able to actually manipulate and make things happen on a less abrasive level than Joffrey. This was a man who made so few mistakes, but based on what the actor told Entertainment Weekly after the fact, the ones that he made with Tyrion almost throughout his life, never being able to get over a predisposed notion of a dwarf as an embarrassment in this world, ended up being what led to his downfall:

“As far as Tywin is concerned, [Tyrion] is the one area he’s failed in because in 15th, 16th century in Europe, any imperfection — whether it’s dwarfism, blindness, a child born unperfected — ideally, you smother them, get rid of them, put them in a bucket or anything … He let Tyrion live, to his astonishment, and Tyrion is the brightest of his three children, the wittiest, and the cleverest. Those are the qualities that he would admire if he weren’t a dwarf, but the fact that he’s a dwarf is a continual reminder of his failure. So as long as he’s alive he’s going to treat him like sh– –it’s horrible.”

What we do find so interesting now is the state of complete disarray that King’s Landing will now be in. Tommen is going to have few real mentors other than Jaime, and we expect war to break loose between Margaery Tyrell and Cersei Lannister over control of him. Meanwhile, there are threads beating down when it comes to everything from Stannis to the White Walkers to even potentially Dany, if she can figure out how is the right way to be a capable ruler.

This of course is one of only great reaction to this finale. If you head over here, you can see what Gwendoline Christie had to say about one of the coolest fight scenes in the history of the show.
