2014 Emmys: ‘Veep,’ ‘The Mindy Project,’ ‘Orange Is the New Black’ stars score CarterMatt nods
At this point maybe two years ago, the majority of the Emmy Comedy Series categories were almost a given to go to “Modern Family.” The only real exception to that were Lead Actor and Actress, since none of the stars would submit in the category. This at least left these two fields wide open for a time, but we do not necessarily feel like it is like that anymore.
As a matter of fact, this category this year could be a very open-and-shut case. There is one clear favorite, and then maybe two or three others on this list have a slight chance of surprising and scoring an upset victory.
Malin Akerman, “Trophy Wife” (ABC) – Probably the biggest longshot of our personal choices. “Trophy Wife” is canceled, but Malin was extremely funny during her time on the show and one of the real reasons why it elevated past the premise of a woman being brought into a crazy community consisting of a father and his various exes.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, “Veep” (HBO) – By far the favorite. Maybe more and more critics have discovered “Veep” this year, or maybe they are just too lazy to give another show a real chance. Either way, it is hard to argue that Julia will most likely win for playing Selina Meyer again, and she is certainly deserving thanks to the great material the writers give her.
Mindy Kaling, “The Mindy Project” (Fox) – Another longshot, but the “The Mindy Project” has to us been a joyful slow burn. It started off uneven, but much like “Parks and Recreation,” it has gotten to be a better and better show with each passing week. Mindy’s talent, patience, and vision all have to be attributed to reasons why.
Wendi McLendon-Covey, “The Goldbergs” (ABC) – McLendon-Covey is right up there with Akerman as a longshot winner, but we feel she does have a better shot at being nominated. “The Goldbergs” was never a show in season 1 that had the press lit up with excitement, but almost every critic you would speak to would agree that the show is funny, and that she is a big reason why.
Amy Poehler, “Parks and Recreation” (NBC) – This is almost getting to Steve Carell territory now in that Amy has done this show for six years, and has never won despite probably deserving at least two trophies for Leslie Knope. She is our sentimental favorite to win, but with all of the change on the show this year and it being later in its run, she faces an uphill battle.
Taylor Schilling, “Orange Is the New Black” (Netflix) – The real darkhorse. “Orange Is the New Black” has become a sensation in the internet age, and while you could argue that the show isn’t completely a comedy, it is funny enough to work here. Smart move to ensure it was submitted in this category. Its biggest obstacle is that we still wonder whether or not Emmy voters are keen to recognize a series that never actually airs on television over others that did.
