‘Last Comic Standing’ preview: What the semifinal rounds contain
So far, NBC has not exactly been that clear when it comes to their format of “Last Comic Standing” this season. Maybe they wanted to see the ratings before deciding on the next move, or maybe they were just that clueless during production.
Either way, the show appears to be adopting something relatively similar to “The Voice” for the semifinal rounds, given that the remaining comics are going to be offered up the help of “advisers” on how they should move forward. There are two semifinal rounds, and somehow through these the field will be narrowed down further. (Once again, though, details on how this is going to happen are still sketchy.
One of these two mentors is going to be Wanda Sykes, which is not much of a shocker given that she is an executive producer on the show. As for the other big name, though, think along the lines of Amy Schumer. She was a former finalist on the show seasons ago, though we wonder if it will be awkward in a way that she is trying to help many comics who have been at it longer than she has. (Amy first started getting into stand-up around a decade ago, and was still fairly green when she was on the show.) Then again, she is a great example of leveraging this into success with hard work, whether that meant doing other reality TV or celebrity roasts before getting a breakout show like “Inside Amy Schumer.”
In the end, we’re mostly hoping to see the return of the house format for the final rounds of the show. We know that not everyone out there loves it, but what we do personally enjoy about it is that it forces comics to really think on their feet, and not always be able to rely on their material.
