2014 Emmys: ‘Hannibal,’ ‘Mad Men,’ ‘Sons of Anarchy’ stars vie for CarterMatt – Guest Actress gold

The latest -Today is the last day that we are profiling performers from the drama category for our 2014 Emmy wish list here on CarterMatt, and we’ve once again got a list of people who run the gamut of great shows.

Like with the Guest Actor in a Drama category, though, it is hard to pin down favorites for Guest Actress when you have so many choices. Sometimes you have great performers on weak shows, and other times you have some that tend to be overlooked. We feel like there is ultimately a little bit of both in here, but the interesting thing here is that we do feel like there is a runaway favorite to win this trophy unlike most other categories this year.

Allison Janney, “Masters of Sex” (Showtime) – Janney is that aforementioned favorite. She’s a lock to be nominated, and anyone defeating her would be a huge upset. Not that we’re complaining, given that her performance as the repressed Margaret Scully was completely mesmerizing.

Teyonah Parris, “Mad Men” (AMC) – Dawn is one of the unsung heroes at SC&P, and she had some phenomenal material this year as she was forced to deal with everything from Don trying to work in stealth mode, racial politics, and also general workplace crises that tend to come up here and there. We’ll always petition to have more of Dawn on the show.

Cynthia Nixon, “Hannibal” (NBC) – It’s easy to dislike Nixon’s character given that she ordered for the arrest of Will Graham and others in the finale, but there is something to be said for being this cold and impossible to read. Nixon has carved out a wonderful post-“Sex and the City” career for herself, and while she may not get a ton of attention for it, she has possibly done better than any of the other female leads.

CCH Pounder, “Sons of Anarchy” (FX) – We’re happy that Pounder got herself a full-time job on “NCIS: Los Angeles,” but the downside there is that it means less of her as Patterson in the Charming – Stockton area. We enjoyed her take on the D.A. part given that she was not the typical law enforcement rival to SAMCRO. It was the political and strategic power she wielded that made her more of a threat.

Charlotte Rampling, “Dexter” (Showtime) – The final season of “Dexter” was a mess, but none of that was Rampling’s fault. As a matter of fact, her take as Dr. Evelyn Vogel was perhaps the best thing about it. Before things started to get really confusing near the end, she was the source of comfort and understanding for Dexter Morgan, and allowed him to at least briefly find an understanding with his sister that he did not otherwise have.

Diana Rigg, “Game of Thrones” (HBO) – Rigg is up there with Janney as a likely nominee, and while we haven’t seen too much of Lady Olenna on the series this year, what we have seen has been great. We’ve probably watched her exchange with Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) from the Purple wedding a million times, and it never gets any less fantastic.

Now, we once again turn this over to you. Share who you feel should win in the poll below (we’ll have more than the six choices again starting tomorrow), and head over here to see the rest of our Emmy polls so far.
