NBC’s ‘The Voice’ review: Josh Kaufman, Christina Grimmie, Jake Worthington’s one last go

The latest -On “The Voice” Monday night, there were many good performances, and then also a few great ones. While this would not have been the lineup of performers we would have chosen going into this, that doesn’t mean that there were duds all over the place.

Tonight, we had a mixture of duets, repeat performances, and brand-new numbers, and we’re going do our best to rank them all here from worst to first!

9. Jake Worthington, “Right Here Waiting” – A little later in this review, we’ll have a performance that is an example of a great slowed-down performance from Jake. This was almost a dirge’s pace, and it certainly wasn’t that pleasant to listen to for that reason. Boring with a capital BORE.

8. Jake Worthington and Blake Shelton, “Country Boy Can Survive” – This was a good performance for Jake … at least sort of. It felt more like he and Blake were having some sort of bro-down party.

7. Christina Grimmie, “Wrecking Ball” – You knew that this was going to be dramatic, and Christina pulled that part of this off really well … or at least as well as she could with this arrangement. We really feel like Miley Cyrus’ version is still so recent that you need to do a real reinvention in order to prevent yourself from looking overdone.

6. Josh Kaufman and Usher, “Every Breath You Take” – These two guys sang this very well … but why choose this song in the first place. This is such a creepy song, especially when the two people are singing it to each other like one of them is stalking the other.

5. Jake Worthington, “Don’t Close Your Eyes” – Jake is at his best singing country ballads. He really does get into the emotion and the storytelling well, and it makes up for his deficiencies in some of the more uptempo songs or things that are slightly out of his genre.

4. Josh Kaufman, “Set Fire to the Rain” – This was a very good performance without a doubt, and a nice way to close the show. It may have been a little too epic, but we understand the sentiment and that it may help him get to the win.

3. Christina Grimmie, “I Can’t Help Falling in Love” – This was a moment, but not one on the same level of what Jena Irene did on “American Idol” earlier this season. Christina has a bad habit of ending many of her phrases with a crescendo / rise up the scale, and she did it a little too often here.

2. Josh Kaufman, “Signed, Sealed Delivered” – This was a very strong vocal from Josh, but out of all of the repeat songs that he could have chose, why this one? Maybe there were rules that kept him from doing something from the live shows, since “Stay With Me” would have been the obvious choice given his previous success with the song.

1. Christina Grimmie and Adam Levine, “Somebody That I Used To Know” – The best duet quite possibly ever on the show between an artist and a coach. We totally felt the mood of this, plus the harmonies were great to boot.
