CBS is certainly taking its time when it comes to whether or not they want to pick up the “How I Met Your Mother” spin-off-that-isn’t-really-a-spin-off “How I Met Your Dad” to series. Prior to the series finale of the original show, we feel like this was almost a given, but after the negative reaction to that story, it has become more of a question mark.
In another big of evidence, though, that Twitter is stuffed full of nonsense about whether the show was passed over or picked up, show co-creator Carter Bays made it abundantly clear that there is still no decision made despite the upfronts quickly approaching. Here is what he specifically had to say on Twitter:
“Quick #HIMYD update: No series order yet. [Co-creator Craig Thomas] and I have asked CBS for a trial by combat.”
This is one of those few times when it legitimately feels like the future of the show is a toss-up. It has been a crazy few months for Bays and Thomas, in between the backlash from the finale and a last-minute recasting of this new show for the role of Sally’s friend. (Sally, the main character on the show, is played by Greta Gerwig.) CBS may not want to take a chance on a show that is mostly inspired by another show, but at the same time they may need the curiosity factor here. While it may not be successful down the road, we imagine that there are still many viewers who would watch the premiere, even some who staunchly hated the “How I Met Your Mother” finale.
