‘Chicago Fire’ season 2 spoilers: Was the ‘Medical’ spin-off really discussed?

Were we at one point actually close to seeing a medicine-themed spin-off series for “Chicago Fire”? This was something that was one of the hotter TV rumors when there was that epic episode earlier this season that featured so much hospital footage, and also Amanda Righetti of “The Mentalist” in a role. NBC loves paying Dick Wolf tons of money to produce shows, and given that they don’t have a series right now that does a good job playing doctor, a number of the components made sense.

However, we now have definitive proof that this is not an idea that is going to be explored any further. According to TVLine, the idea for a “Chicago Med” (which is the name that we are calling the idea and not anything official) was discussed internally, but that it’s not happening. It was never a formal backdoor pilot like we saw with “Supernatural: Bloodlines” or “The Originals” over on The CW last year.

Still, we are not necessarily ruling out the possibility of this setting getting some more burn at some point in the future. Wolf has created a pretty extensive universe for Severide and the rest of these characters to live in, and that makes there possibilities to see this hospital and some of these actors in the future. After all, these are firemen, and firemen have a tendency to get hurt.

In going back to “Chicago Fire” for a minute, the series already has one spin-off show in “Chicago PD,” and you can expect to see some more crossover when it comes to these two moving way into the future.
