‘Dads,’ ‘Surviving Jack,’ and ‘Enlisted’ canceled by Fox after one season each
Is Fox getting out of the comedy business? We’re not saying that, but the network isn’t picking up a whole heap of new shows in the genre. It’s more like a small handful.
Also, we know now that some cancellations are official, per some reports breaking late Wednesday.
“Dads” – Will many people miss the crass comedy? We do actually know that it has its fans, with our frequent podcast collaborator Jason Prager being one of them. We actually did thing that it had a chance at renewal as well, given that its ratings were actually better than they’ve been for “New Girl” or “The Mindy Project” that past few weeks. Plus, it repeats very well. This cancellations seems more out of the fact that Fox didn’t like all the complaining about the show.
“Enlisted” – This one really bums us out. “Enlisted” was a really funny and heartwarming show that was about something different than the majority of the others. It was just cursed with a bad timeslot on Friday nights, and never really had much of a chance to make a mark.
“Surviving Jack” – You can at least argue that this sitcom had a chance thanks to it airing after “American Idol” results shows. Unfortunately, its problem was mostly just that it got zero buzz despite star Christopher Meloni, and the “American Idol” results are not a lucrative lead-in like they once were.
Fox also passed over a number of comedy pilots today, including “No Place Like Home,” “Fatrick,” and “Dead Boss.” They already have John Mulaney’s self-titled “Mulaney” coming on for at least 16 episodes, and also “Last Man on Earth” with Will Forte and “Weird Loners” with Becki Newton. They may not pick up any more comedies, and if they do, it will probably only be one more.
