‘New Girl’ season 3 finale review: Did Nick or Jess move out?

“New Girl” season 3 has certainly been a roller-coaster ride. There have been some serious highs when it comes to comedy and relationships, but also plenty of lows. We feel like the Nick / Jess relationship got a little bit stale at times, but the breakup has actually been pretty fun.

Tonight’s episode “Cruise” was certainly weird and wacky, but it contained plenty of character development as we started to figure out what really makes some people tick with the entire gang aboard a boat. Jess and Nick tried to engage in couples’ activities, only for him to try to kiss her … and that didn’t work out well at now.

In the end, the important thing to come out of this is that Nick and Jess were forced to sit down together and really talk about their relationship for a change. Schmidt actually offered Nick an opportunity to bunk with him just like their days in college, and that was a chance for him to finally get a little bit of distance from the relationship, and also some more closure to go along with it (for now). He can move ahead, and Jess can do the same with Winston and Coach as her new roommates. Hopefully, these three can afford the rent, which is something that really has not gotten the sort of publicity that it should.

In the end, this episode was charming, but not exactly something that reinvented the wheel or shocked us to any degree. It was just light, reasonably funny, and something that probably could be watched on a DVR just fine. That, in the end, may be the biggest fault of the season. Grade: B-.
