‘American Idol XIII’ results: Did Jessica Meuse, Dexter Roberts go home before top 6?

American Idol -Thursday night’s “American Idol XIII” results show was one that did have us at least moderately nervous about there being a possible favorite being sent home. Jessica Meuse, for example, went early in the show, and that never bodes well for contestants who also don’t get the best feedback.

But at least through the first 15 minutes, everything went according to plan. Dexter Roberts was the first contestant put in jeopardy, and Alex Preston and Jena Irene were labeled “safe.” If the pattern held, he would probably be joined by Sam Woolf and CJ Harris, who have perpetually stayed at the bottom of the rankings for some time.

Well, the pattern did not hold, and some of our pre-show concerns were correct as Jessica was in danger for the first time all season. Doing something more country, coupled with also that dreadful trio, must have been what really hurt her. We like the shakeup, but we still didn’t want to see her leave the competition. Her body of work is just so much better than Dexter’s.

America did make the right choice, and Dexter went home first. There was at least some drama this week, and hopefully a wake-up call for Jessica to raise her game.

This season right now does have us critically in a weird spot. Most of the good singers have for the most part stuck around, and the only somewhat-surprise was that Majesty Rose was eliminated a little earlier than expected. This is good for competition, but bad for entertainment and conversation. This is yet another reason that “American Idol” has seen some ratings declines as of late. Maybe tonight changes that, but we’ll have to wait and see. Grade: C+.
