Stephen Colbert books ‘Late Show with David Letterman’ visit; Chelsea Handler gossip

Highlights -Obviously, CBS, David Letterman, and Stephen Colbert all want to make the most of the news that “The Late Show with David Letterman” is going to become the future home of the “Colbert Report” host. After all, the network confirmed today that Stephen will visit “The Late Show” next week to seemingly talk all about it.

Colbert’s interview on April 22 will likely contain plenty of discussion about how the plan came together for Colbert to replace Letterman, and you have to believe that this was in the works for some time. Was it really a coincidence that Colbert’s contract was up this year, around the same exact time that he could take over the Letterman gig? We have a hard time believing so. He was always the first choice of CBS for the job.

As for the other CBS-related story of the day, Chelsea Handler stirred up plenty of conversation last night when she posted a photo on Twitter of herself with documents from a “business meeting” … which have the famous Eye logo on them. When you remember the reports that she wants to leave “Chelsea Lately” and that Craig Ferguson’s future beyond the network this year is unclear, the gossip has to be clear that she could be a possible replacement.

Personally, we’d much prefer for Craig to stay put in that he’s irrelevant, sometimes heartfelt, and seemingly celebrates at times how his show has almost zero budget and no band. Chelsea is a very in-your-face comic who likes to tell controversial jokes, and CBS is the most conservative network out there. It’d be nice to have a woman on the network late-night landscape, but we almost see her as a better anchor for a show following Jimmy Kimmel.

Update: Per The Hollywood Reporter, CBS has denied that there was a meeting with Handler about the “Late Late Show” gig. Instead, she was meeting with the network’s syndication group.
