‘Once Upon a Time’ season 3, episode 17 video: All about Colin O’Donoghue’s Hook

Want to know something that’s interesting straight out of the gate about the latest “Once Upon a Time” sneak peek? Think along the lines of the following: Even though Captain Hook may be a pirate, he may not necessarily be a scoundrel. Still, he does somehow have a capacity for finding unique ways to hurt women emotionally.

At first glance, you see Hook in the video below as a guy who is holding on to memories of Emma Swan. Despite Colin O’Donoghue’s pirate being bought a local woman (we’re trying to be politically-correct here since this is a family show), he gives her money to lie and pretend like she had a nice night with him.

From there, though, things get a little strange. Ariel knocks him over the head, puts a knife to his throat, and claims that he will pay for what he’s done. This isn’t exactly a dynamic that has been explored before, and to be honest, the show has its work cut out for it trying to sell us on the idea that sweet Ariel is suddenly going to become the show’s version of Oliver Queen or Daryl Dixon.

With all this being said, we are happy that Ariel is back on the show, and we’d like to see a little more of her story that doesn’t tie all the way to Prince Eric. There are a few too many supporting roles on the show that have their stories by and large locked into romance all the time.
