‘Call the Midwife’ season 4 spoilers: Actor on key departure, changes ahead
Since we’re in the midst of covering “Call the Midwife” season 3 in America, we want to start this piece off with a courtesy warning. If you haven’t watched all of season 3 yet, stop reading now. You’re going to otherwise be pretty darn disappointed with knowing what happens.
Are you ready to read on then? Okay then … As you may know if you’re still reading, the show lost a pretty key component at the end of season 3 when Jessica Raine decided to say goodbye. Jenny is still alive, but her character decided to pursue another goal that she finds more in line with her calling.
This is obviously something that the actors are going to have to get used to, and they are aware of that. Just take a look, for example, at what Ben Kaplan (Peter Noakes) said to Digital Spy:
“It was sad to see her go, but she wanted to move over to pastures new … I also respected her decision that she’d done the show and got what she needed to get out of it, so it was time to move on.
“It’ll be interesting to see how we progress, but it will progress! The show is obviously bigger than one element of it … The show’s going to change a lot moving into a different decade, and if there’s going to be a big change, I think it’s the right time to do it.”
Will the series continue to work without Jenny? We feel like it can, mostly because it may have the same exact problems without her that it did with her. Namely, we’re talking about the inability for some of the stories to matter beyond a few minutes. We understand that this is a serial with procedural elements, but can you give the characters larger arcs that do not stop and start? Maybe Jenny’s story of her leaving, coming back, and leaving again in season 3 further complicated things.
