‘Call the Midwife’ season 4: More on the mystery that lies ahead

Now seems like a great time to discuss the future for “Call the Midwife,” largely because we are staring in the center of one of the show’s biggest creative crossroads to date. (Warning: Spoilers ahead for Americans!)

See this picture attached? Well, one notable face in particular in Jessica Raine’s Jenny Lee is gone. The show has to form a new identity without the actress, and while they started to do that at times during season 3, there is still work to be done. Luckily, this work is being acknowledged by all parties involved, and there is still some sort of zeal in making sure that it happens.

One thing that we do know for the time being is that there is still plenty of uncertainty even for that cast. The comments specifically from series star Jenny Agutter (Julienne) to What’s On TV further prove that:

“I haven’t seen any of the scripts so I really don’t know. But I know (creator and writer) Heidi Thomas is a very clever writer – she’ll be creating things for the actors that will be about real things, but she will be drawing on different subjects than Jennifer Worth’s stories.

“From the nuns that were in that house and the midwives of that period, there are very good things to draw on.”

This is most likely the reason why this show will survive even without one of its main characters: It remains steadfast, strong, and focused on the era and the sort of stories that impacted mothers there. These tales for this show have mattered just about as much as each individual person within Nonnatus House.

“Call the Midwife” returns to American TV this weekend, and we are therefore going to do our part to discuss anything and everything that occurs there.
