ABC’s ‘Scandal’ season 3, episode 14 review: Who died, and Huck and Quinn’s surprise
There are so many things to get to when it comes to tonight’s “Scandal” season 3 episode, and there really was no better name for it than “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.” That is a somewhat-cynical title given what happened in the hour, but this is not often a show that really paints anything (including death) with a sentimental lens.
So to see the death of James here tonight was truly shocking. We understand that there was a motive on Jake’s part in order to pull out the act, but it was completely devastating still … especially when it comes to seeing Cyrus’ reaction to it all. Jeff Perry was absolutely brilliant in all of this, as we saw all sorts of flashbacks into what Cyrus’ past was like, how he met James, and what their relationship evolved into.
If this story didn’t have you getting a little teary-eyed by the end of this episode, then we will be rather shocked. Seeing Cyrus break down at the podium has to go down as one of the hardest-to-watch moments of the entire show, and we are interested in seeing just how that impacts the Grant campaign in the future. It could be seen as sympathetic, or also a little much.
While this happened, David Rosen had to deal with the ramifications of what happened, feeling like he was a target, and also whether or not to tell Abby about everything. Jake was also off in the shadows for most of this, until it was revealed at the end that he was actually with James until the moment that he died. If you had stopped tearing up, this moment probably made you start all over again.
Just in case this was all not crazy enough, Huck and Quinn … kissed? Who in the world saw that coming in the way that it did? We imagine that this moment was all sorts of fan service wrapped into a few seconds.
Overall, we’re willing to say that this may be the best episode of “Scandal” ever. You know that when Mellie’s exploits kissing Andrew are almost an afterthought. Grade: A.
