Later this season, “Grey’s Anatomy” is going to do something that we almost felt was never going to happen: Bring back Isaiah Washington in the role of Dr. Burke. Just look back at the history that is there, including the way the actor left the show, and the movement that has happened with Cristina in her personal life ever since. We just didn’t think that it would ever happen.
But, it has, and Washington’s return as Burke is apparently going to surprise many of you. Speaking to “Access Hollywood” in a new interview promoting his new series “The 100,” the actor teased that the story would “blow you away.” He just read the script for the episode the day before speaking with them, and while he gave absolutely nothing away, he feels that fans are going to be very much satisfied.
Washington was also extremely complimentary in the interview towards show creator and executive producer Shonda Rhimes, who is responsible for getting him back in the first place. He declined to mention whether or not she reached out to him or vice-versa, but she said in a statement that having Burke back ensures that Cristina’s journey has that “full circle” moment that it really needs for her to leave the show at the end of this season.
Obviously, the one thing that we are still the most curious about is that now that Washington has come back, whether or not we could ever see Katherine Heigl ever return. Shonda Rhimes all but confirmed on Twitter recently that she will not be back for Cristina’s farewell, which to us means that the only time in which we could possibly see the character return would be for a stint right around the end of the series.
