‘The Amazing Race 24’ episode 2 review: Mark & Mallory versus backpack backlash
Going into Sunday night’s episode of “The Amazing Race 24,” we had a feeling that Mark & Mallory were going to be in trouble based on an incident of them forgetting his backpack; however, if there is one thing that we have learned when it comes to this show, it is that promos can be deceiving.
This is why what happened from here on out was actually pretty clever. Mark & Mallory still went home thanks in part to the backpack, but it was due to something else in the end: Not completing a detour all about playing a version of hacky-sack called featherball in a fast enough time. Would they have managed to stayed alive had they not had the backpack incident? We’re going to assume so, mostly because of the fact that they were at one point in first place during this episode, and could have at least finished ahead of John & Jessica and Joey & Meghan.
This is what made Mark’s move to go get the backpack so baffling in many ways. We understand that he does not come from much money, but you make money just by appearing on the show. Isn’t that enough to actually pay for everything in there and then some? If Mallory’s got your medicine and your passport, ditch the backpack. We know that you’d smell, but maybe you could borrow clothes from other teammates, or at least buy a new t-shirt or two for the road. Bad move on Mark’s part, though they were probably not long for the race anyway.
We talk a ton about this because this episode was pretty dull otherwise. The challenges were much too easy, and there isn’t much else to talk about. In a photo-finish Brendon & Rachel won their first-ever leg ahead of Margie & Luke, but the paying field should be leveled next week when the teams go to Malaysia. The only other big move? Caroline & Jennifer doing what they had to do to get Jet & Cord’s Express Pass … pathetic as it was to watch them beg. For the Cowboys, this is great! They’ve got that other Express Pass out of the way, and now they only have theirs that they can play at some point in the future. Grade: B-.
