‘Sherlock’ season 4: Benedict Cumberbatch talks his new fan name
There has been a somewhat interesting trend over the past five years, sparked possibly by the rise in social media and the desire for so many fans of various artists to have some sort of name to identify with. This has applied to everyone from singers to actors to even personalities … and Benedict Cumberbatch is someone who has been very involved in all of this, even if it was not something he necessarily asked for.
Have you ever heard the word “Cumberb***hes” used? If you love the “Sherlock” star, you probably have. But, it does appear as though this term come be changing thanks to some criticism. Just see what Cumberbatch had to say on the subject in a new interview with the Huffington Post:
“They’re actually changing themselves to the Cumbercollectives … They’ve gone down the rout of reversing the negative backlash of however many years of feminism and it was a little bit worrying … I didn’t ask for this sort of subservient, demeaning collective, and they go, ‘Oh no, it’s only a joke.'”
Of course, everything is a matter of context when you are talking about things like this. To us, for example, there was never really any doubt that the name was meant to be anything other than silly and fun … but you know how the internet works. It is very easy to be offended by something, especially if you are someone who doesn’t know the meaning behind it.
At the end of the day, what’s important here is really pretty simple: People love Benedict Cumberbatch, and there is not any evidence that this is going to change at some point in the near future. “Sherlock” season 4 has no premiere or production dates yet, but we’ll let you know as soon as some more news pops up.

It was far less about “backlash” and more about the man being distinctly uncomfortable using the term himself. He’s on record, in print and TV interviews, going back at least a year, probably more, pleading for the term Cumberbitch to go away. Members of the press are primarily the ones who refuse to let it die. (Part desire to be titilating by using a “naughty” word, and part due to crappy subject research.) His fans are so deferential that they pretty much stopped using it as soon as his opposition became known.
Frankly, as one of his fans, I’m ok with just being called a fan.
