‘How I Met Your Dad’: Is Eliza Dushku joining ‘How I Met Your Mother’ spin-off?
What was interesting about the cast for “How I Met Your Mother” is the mixture that exists there almost from the ground up. You had someone in Josh Radnor who entered the show as a relative unknown, and then two people in Neil Patrick Harris and Alyson Hannigan who were pretty famous previously thanks to other shows. (Jason Segel was, as well, to the diehard fans of “Freaks & Geeks.”)
So with this in mind, it is pretty likely that CBS is going to go for a similar mixture for their “How I Met Your Dad” project. While Greta Gerwig (who plays the lead Sally) is big in some indie circles, she’s not a name that many mainstream viewers will know. Therefore, should it really be much of a surprise that Eliza Dushku (“Dollhouse,” a variety of other things) was at least reading the pilot script? It shouldn’t be. The actress said on Twitter that she was “reading the pilot,” and compared it to a “first date” rather than some sort of actual announcement that she was joining.
This is not necessarily a guarantee that Dushku will join the show, given that Jennifer Love Hewitt was at one point in contention to play Robin in the original before Cobie Smulders got the part. (Hewitt went instead with “Ghost Whisperer” at the time.) But, it is still very intriguing. Based on the information out there, our guess is that Dushku could play the part of Juliet, who is a friend of Sally’s who operates a fashion blog. The obvious comparison would be to call her the Barney of this show, but that’s not to suggest that she will be the same exact character. It’s just that she fills the role of “longtime single friend.”
