Clearly, ABC loves giving us “Castle.” Why? They are willing to give us yet another extra installment this year in order to make sure we get our fill.
As finally confirmed by TVLine after rumors of it for the past week or so, the show will get a 23rd episode this season to go along with the standard 22-episode renewal. To call this a surprise would be saying something that’s not exactly true; “Castle” has a habit of getting bonus episodes every season, given that every season since the first has featured at least 23 episodes, if not 24 in some cases like last year.
So why the reason for so many extra episodes here? It really comes down largely to ABC continually having a desire for more new programming on Monday night, given that they have “Dancing with the Stars” and “The Bachelor” straight from September until May, and they want to pair that up with as much new programming as possible.
The only time that we could really ever see these extra orders being a little bit more difficult is later on in “Castle’s” run, since that is when it becomes more expensive to license the show, and you also have Nathan Fillion, Stana Katic, and the rest of the cast and crew to pay (which gets more expensive to do over time). So for now, let’s enjoy getting a little something extra, since it’s not something that is ever really guaranteed, especially since ABC could someday decide to add another show to their Monday lineup rather than ever repeating “Castle” at all.
