‘New Girl’ season 3, episode 15 review: Realism, or revisionist history?

How much you enjoyed “New Girl” this week is probably going to depend on just how much you enjoy your comedy with a slice of romance. We had the return of Caroline, and also the appearance of Adam Brody as Jess’ ex Berkley; however, what we were not expecting to see was that most of the episode would be spent trying to justify that Nick left Caroline because he always had feelings for Jess.

Did it really have to be about Jess as much as it was? We don’t think so, and feel like this is where this show gets itself in trouble these days: They really do make Zooey Deschanel’s character the center of attention almost every second of the day. There are times that this happens even when there is not any justification for it. We would’ve liked to receive one other suggestion from Nick that there was another reason for the breakup with Caroline, at least to learn something more about him that was not previously known.

The ultimate feeling throughout the Nick / Jess storyline is that it was almost giving us a little bit of revisionist history to satisfy the characters with the relationships that they are in now. The Schmidt / Winston / Coach story regarding the former turning his place into a hookup haven was slightly more successful; while there is nothing here that is going to matter long-term, it was at least worthy of a few laughs here and there. Is Coach really offering anything new to the show right now? We’re still not sure, but at least this was the better story of the two. Grade: C+.
