Super Bowl XLVIII: ‘American Idol’ winner Phillip Phillips performs ‘Gone, Gone, Gone’

For those of you who have been hoping that Fox would give some “American Idol” alums some individual attention during the Super Bowl XLVIII pre-game show, you’ll be pleased to know that they did give Phillip Phillips at least a little bit of an opportunity to shine during the broadcast.

Even though we know that Phillip has been working on some new music on his upcoming sophomore album, he chose to perform something that was a little bit more well-known for the show today: A cover of his big hit “Gone, Gone, Gone.” For Phillip, it may just be considered a win that he didn’t have to perform “Home” again. That has been one of the most-played songs at national events in probably the past decade or so, ever since the NBC Olympics in 2012 caused the song to become a smash.

There is still one thing in particular that we are still hoping to understand when it comes to the game: Why in the world we don’t have even more of an “American Idol” presence at the big game? Why not celebrate Candice Glover by giving her some more opportunities to shine? After all, there are few out there who would have been more qualified to sing the National Anthem, and she does have a new album coming out later this month entitled “Music Speaks” (which has already been delayed a number of times).

“American Idol” is now in the middle of its 13th episode, where the producers / judges are desperately hoping to find another Phillip Phillips-level star on the show. He and Scotty McCreery are the two most-successful champions to come out of the show since season 8, when Kris Allen and Adam Lambert burst onto the scene.

What did you think about Phillip’s performance?
