‘Girls’ season 3, episode 5 review: Hannah’s new worst thing ever
If there is a word that you could use to describe Saturday night’s “Girls,” it is predictable. Nothing in the episode was bad, but at the same time, there was not a single thing that took place that could not have been chartered out and predicted a long period of time in advance. This ultimately just ended up being one of the most by-the-numbers episodes to date, whether you are talking about Hannah throwing Caroline out to the surprising hook-up that took place.
The reason why Marnie and Ray was so hard to call was that they are both in a way similar people. Ray may not have that same air of arrogance about him, but he does seem to be perpetually lost. There’s a part of Marnie that also wanted something to happen, given that she would not have otherwise went over to his house in the first place. Will anything become of it? Probably in terms of storytelling, but we don’t see the two of them walking down the aisle at any point in the near future.
As for Hannah, it made sense in a way that she would start to get so close to everything that she wanted and then some, only to then realize that her dreams of getting a book of essays about her life published would be completely destroyed thanks to a contractual agreement that keeps her rights with another publisher. (This sort of stuff does happen!) So she is completely screwed, and she thought that she was then doing the right thing by her and Adam to kick Caroline to the curb. Then, lo and behold, Adam gets upset when she actually does it.
The part of this episode that to us was the most fascinating is the part that may not get much publicity right now: The warning from Hannah’s dad about a procedure that he recently had done. Clearly, he wanted to tell her about something serious, and she wouldn’t let him. We’ll never say that we want to see a character die, but this seems to be the path the show is taking here. This will be truly the hardest thing she has ever gone through if it happens, and it may also be that wake-up call that she and many young people need to get some of their you-know-what together and stop being so dramatic over the petty garbage.
All in all, this was an awkward episode. At times, it was funny, but we prefer “Girls” when we are actually surprised by what happens every week. Grade: B-.
