‘The Carrie Diaries’ season 3: What are the odds of AnnaSophia Robb show returning?

Later tonight on The CW, you are going to have the opportunity to bid farewell to “The Carrie Diaries,” one of the most-popular shows on the network in a certain demographic of young women, for at least the rest of the television season … and maybe forever. You see, this is a show whose future still hangs in the balance. There is no word about whether or not it will be renewed, and this is a decision that the folks behind the scenes are going to struggle with for at least the next couple of months.

So what is helping the series? Mostly, we see it as a combination of three things:

1. The timeslot – For the show to pull the ratings that it does on Friday nights is reasonably encouraging, since it’s at least a sure thing. If you move something like “Reign” or “The Tomorrow People” to this time, there is no guarantee that they would do anywhere near as well.

2. The viewing demographic – This is a show that has one of the youngest groups of viewers out of any on the network, let along network TV. That is something that you want to try to hold on to, even if it is a small batch.

3. The alternate viewing statistics – One of the reasons why “The Carrie Diaries” was renewed this time was because it apparently performs well when it comes to online viewing either from The CW’s website or other services. These are figures that are harder to come by than DVR ratings or the traditional live+same day data that we look at much of the time.

Right now, we feel like the show is firmly on the bubble, but with “Beauty and the Beast” likely canceled, “Nikita” over, and “The Tomorrow People” facing an uncertain future, it’s at least got a shot to be plugged in for another 13 episodes if it keeps this same sort of audience.
