Super Bowl commercials: ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s’ Terry Crews, Toyota, and The Muppets team up
In our latest Super Bowl commercial preview, we now have the opportunity to present what we personally feel like is one of the smarter ads just when it comes to concept alone: The full spot featuring Terry Crews (of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”) for Toyota, which also features a cameo appearance by the Muppets as everyone sings about how there is no room in their lives at all for “boring.”
When it comes to casting, we can’t imagine that there was a better choice out there than Crews for this leading role. After all, he is a guy who we have come to know first and foremost for playing these guys who look tough on the surface, and have a sweet, funny guy on the inside. This is his character in a nutshell on the Fox sitcom, which is appropriately airing after the Super Bowl this year following “New Girl,” which has its extremely big-name guest star in Prince.
Crews has a good history doing ads, at least in that prior to joining Toyota, he had a high-profile gig as one of the Old Spice Men to follow in the wake of Isaiah Mustafa. While his spots never captured the greatness of the “now back to you back to me back to you” craziness that we saw with Isaiah, they were funny in their own way. Plus, Terry got a chance to remain you that he’s built like a tank. (Anytime someone gets an opportunity to get this guy to take off his shirt, they go through with it.)
The other thing worth noting here is that with this ad, Toyota is also trying to appeal itself largely to the family crowd more so than many other car companies. A good comparison comes in how last year they decided to use Kaley Cuoco as a spokesperson, who tried to make some passengers’ dreams come true as a genie.
If you want to dive into the world of Super Bowl commercials this year, we want to be your source. You can see some of the ads that are already out there at the link here, and if you come back on Sunday, we are going to have a full look at the spots during the game along with grades.
