The 2014 Emmys move on NBC to a Monday … seriously

In a move that seems to have only been possible on a network like NBC, the 2014 Emmy Awards are undergoing a little bit of a shift from what you traditionally expect.

The first major twist here is something that you probably saw coming a mile away: Airing a little earlier in the year. Four years ago when the show was last on the peacock network, it aired in August in order to accommodate the NFL regular-season schedule. Given that the gridiron is a huge ratings draw no matter the time of year, this move makes a great deal of sense.

But airing on a Monday? That is something new entirely. The network confirmed today that Monday, August 25 at 8:00 p.m. Eastern would be the start time for the show, which is the first time in many decades that the show has aired at such a time.

So why make this move? NBC, who also likes to double as an international network of mystery, is not saying for now. It’s possible that the NFL could once again be involved, but how terrible would it look for the Emmys if they were moved because of a preseason game? Those games have no bearing on the Super Bowl at all, while this is the most important awards show for the television industry of the year.

There was no announcement today of a host, which is only somewhat surprising given that there has been a tradition of late of announcing hosts for many awards shows long in advance. The last time NBC had the Emmys, Jimmy Fallon was the master of ceremonies for a show that drew rave reviews. We could see him doing it again, but a more likely scenario would be for them to wait until early returns of “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” and then name the current “Saturday Night Live” head writer the emcee. He has the young awards show that needs promotion, and he would do a good job riffing and roasting the stars in attendance, even if he is not as musical as Fallon and may not create as many internet-worthy moments.
