‘Sherlock’ season 4 spoilers: Steven Moffat hesitant on Irene Adler’s future
Did you really enjoy seeing Irene Adler back on “Sherlock” season 2? We know that her appearance helped to lift the show to another level; but at the same time, this is a show that is very cautious with what they decide to do and not do. You may have enjoyed the character in the past, but that doesn’t mean that you will see her again in the future. (You will not see her during season 3.)
So what are the odds for a season 4 appearance? Executive producer Steven Moffat did not necessarily answer one way or the other in an interview with TVLine, but he did make it very clear that the only way that we would see more Irene is in the event that there was a story worthy of her reintroduction to the show:
“It’s not impossible, because she’s still alive and out there … But I was really, really pleased with [Season 2’s Irene-centric] ‘A Scandal in Belgravia,’ and that sense of longing between those two characters. The question is, can you do it again without making it lessgood? Are sequels ever as good? Do you really make more money or do you debase the coinage? If we had as good a story as ‘Scandal’ and somewhere else to take them, we’d do it again. But, in the meantime, we’re thrilled with that episode and wary of touching it again. There are many other stories tell.”
Some of those stories moving forward into season 3 (at least for Americans) include seeing the wedding of Watson and Mary, and also an opportunity to see Charles Augustus Magnussen, one of the most-feared villains on the surface across the series so far. There is a great deal of literature out there to take stories from, but it is also possible that Moffat and Mark Gatiss can come up with some more brilliant stuff on their own.
