‘Saturday Night Live’ preview: Drake, Bobby Moynihan, Jay Pharoah mix some beats

Drake is going to have himself quite a busy week up in New York City. Not only is the rapper hosting this weekend’s edition of “Saturday Night Live,” but he also happens to be the musical guest. There are only a few select people a year who get an opportunity to do this, with the last big ones being Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus.

But will he be capable of doing a good job? The good news here is that like both of those two singers, he also does have a history of performing thanks to the Canadian TV show “Degrassi.” That is even one of the things that he spoofs alongside Bobby Moynihan and Jay Pharoah in the preview for the show below. In addition to that, there is also an extremely funny take on “Started From the Bottom,” some awkward moments where Pharoah tries to curtail his man-love for the rapper, and also Moynihan playing him a track made up entirely of cats.

The only problem for us with the promo? That there is about two minutes spent on some elaborate bit where both Moynihan and Pharoah attempt to impress him by acting like they “lay down beats” in the studio that this video takes place in, when neither one of them do anything of the sort. As a matter of fact, all they are really doing here in continuing to bring it up is embarrassing themselves more and more. Sometimes, “SNL” falls a little too in love with an idea, and then spends too long convincing you that it is actually awesome. That happens here, but that’s one of the great things about the show in that you never know when something is going to land or flop.
