2014 Golden Globes: Tina Fey, Amy Poehler jab at George Clooney, Bradley Cooper in opening

The 2014 Golden Globes always open with some sort of comedy presentation, mostly at the expense of other stars. For a long time, that meant so many people being forced to duck and cover thanks to Ricky Gervais, but that started to change somewhat in 2013 with Amy Poehler and Tina Fey. They did their fair share of mockery, but they were less vicious and more goofy when it comes to their comedy.

So what did the two funny ladies decide to do this time around? After being extremely secretive about their plans beforehand, the “Saturday Night Live” alumni started off by having some fun with names, managing to pronounce some of the more difficult names before messing up “Tom Hanks.” Then, they proceeded to call Matt Damon a “garbage person” compared to all of the big stars that are in the room. Then the targets moved onto Meryl Streep, Martin Scorsese, Bradley Cooper (which contained a great jab at a wig factory), and Jennifer Lawrence.

One of the best moments of the entire opening came when Poehler and Fey joked that Julia Louis-Dreyfus had gone Hollywood, while showing her smoking a fake cigarette and refusing a selfie with Reese Witherspoon. Then, there was a joke related to George Clooney and “Gravity” all about how he doesn’t want to be with a woman the same age as him.

All in all, it was a funny opening … but not altogether biting. Save for the two jokes above, there really was not anything that we are going to remember beyond tonight. We almost wish that Fey and Poehler, while solid, were a little bit edgier in the end.
