‘Hawaii Five-0’ season 4, episode 11 review: Heather Dubrow and holiday spirit

“Hawaii Five-0” aired its final episode of 2013 on Friday night, and with a name like “Merry Evasion,” it probably was not too hard to figure out that this was going to be an episode that contained some of both the good and the bad. The good? There was a Hawaii Christmas, which mostly consists of some tradition and also talk about snow on Mauna Kea. Also, the writers didn’t let anything go to waste when it comes to telling a story. We had a serial killer, a pretty ruthless action sequence involving Chin Ho, and even a guest appearance from a “Real Housewives of Orange County” cast member.

After appearing in some comedies earlier this year in “Hot in Cleveland” and “Malibu Country” (with the latter serving as a big storyline on the Bravo show), Heather Dubrow did a great job in her part here, and also ended up helping to save the life of Daniel Dae Kim’s character as he and the killer squared off in what was a bloody basement shootout. Luckily, it wasn’t long after this that the police arrived, and the situation was under control.

While the case was pretty dramatic, we’re pleased to report that the final few episodes did alter the mood at least somewhat, in between a romantic Chin Ho on the beach and a Santa that would probably make Megyn Kelly freak out a little bit. While you could say that the ending was somewhat sad, it was almost in a good way. Seeing Danny find a way to bring a locket back to a man who appreciated it greatly in Japan was what the Christmas spirit was all about. While it may not be a life-shattering “Hawaii Five-0” episode, it was an exciting and touching one … and a nice one to use to shut the door on 2013. Grade: A-.
