‘Once Upon a Time’ season 3, episode 7 preview: Enter Skull Island, Belle, and Storybrooke
For the first time, we actually know a little bit about what is happening on “Once Upon a Time” this season when it comes to Peter Pan’s endgame. This has long been the biggest problem with the Neverland story in that while we know a few things about the character and that he is somewhat evil, the motivations were unclear. Why do you really need Henry and the Heart of the Truest Believer?
Well, we now understand. they needed to find a way over time to convince him that not only did Emma and his family abandon him, but that they needed him to risk his life in order to help ensure that the magic stayed within Neverland. This is a story that actually reminds us a little bit of the end of “Lost,” and now that he seems to be on board (thanks to a plot set up in part courtesy of Wendy Darling), they can head over to the infamous Skull Island and try to begin the ritual to save their beloved world.
Now, we are actually invested in this story! We were already invested in what was going on with some of our main characters on the island, and this week saw the return of Storybrooke as some of the characters in the tiny Maine town lent a helping hand in order to make sure that Ariel could bring back with her the tools necessary to defeat Pan. In the process, we learned that the “villains” haunting the town, otherwise known as the new Greg and Tamara, were actually the siblings of young Wendy Darling … just a little bit older. They were convinced that Belle and Ariel had the tools to actually lend them a helping hand, and they therefore changed their tune a little bit. This was a little surprising, but not as surprising as them calling Pan the “home office” even though they knew very well who he was. That was obviously just something thrown in there for us to throw us off.
While the show did not do a good job addressing the departure of Ruby, and while Emma’s whole “I choose Henry” speech to Neal and Hook was a little cliche, “Dark Hollow” was still a very good episode for the show. It established more of what the endgame for this season is going to be, not only in terms of what Pan wants to do, but what the others need to do in order to stop him. Grade: B.
