ABC’s ‘Scandal’ season 3, episode 3 preview: Olivia Pope’s most explosive situation yet

When “Scandal” returns to ABC next week, what we are going to see is the beginning of an episode that somehow may even have this one beat when it comes to drama. While it is not entirely clear right now just how that is even possible, this is a show that tends to up the ante almost every week.

The title for next week is “Mrs. Smith Goes to Washington,” and before you check out the video promo below, be sure to read the full synopsis. We like to think that it accents the mystery to a certain degree:

“A Midwestern mom hires Pope & Associates under mysterious conditions that lead to a very dangerous situation. Meanwhile, Fitz and Mellie admit their true feelings for each other.”

What is this “dangerous situation” precisely? Think along the lines of someone having a bomb strapped to them, where they are going to do almost everything in their power to destroy Olivia’s world and all that she touches. This is an issue so drastic that the White House will be involved, but for very different reasons than you traditionally see.

What seems to us to be the biggest mystery right now is why in the world we are being told that this is the time that we are supposed to care about this story? Why isn’t it later on down the road? There’s no connection to the affair right now that is visible, or the operation that caused Jake Ballard to show up on Olivia’s doorstep. Just a bomb, and one that is tick-ticking away.
