‘How I Met Your Mother’ season 9, episode 1 review: Ted – Robin drama; Lily meets the Mother
“How I Met Your Mother” is back, and one episode into the new season, we have to say that we are enjoying the “Mother” experiment. Cristin Milioti brings a sense of charm and entertainment to the proceedings, and the only criticism that we could offer about that is that Ted interrupted the thoughts of the conversation between her and Lily a little too much on the train.
In this conversation, we learned that the Mother is kind, helpful, a great baker, and also someone who, like Ted, strangely enjoys driving gloves as much as the next person. We’ll have a little bit more on what the two talked about later, but we want to touch on a few other stories from “The Locket” first.
Marshall – At first, Jason Segel’s character was on the way back to Manhattan by plane, only to be derailed by something most unfortunate: His mother posting a photo online of himself and Marvin bragging about him becoming a judge. Lily didn’t know yet, and his fuss over the phone when his mother couldn’t figure out how to delete it caused him and another passenger (Sherri Shepherd) to be booted.
It was somewhat weird to see Marshall isolated for the full episode, but Shepherd is extremely funny. Ironically, it was Marvin who actually deleted the photo, proving apparently that humans know nothing.
Barney and Robin – These two were traveling via car to Farhampton, where they made a pretty terrifying revelation that the two may actually be related. There was barfing, freaking out, mass awkwardness, and a great “Game of Thrones” joke as the two wondered whether or not they had some sort of creepy connection.
As it turns out, the connection was adopted … and now the only thing that Robin has to worry about is a “ringbear.” Or, a ring-bearer.
Ted – After Ted ditched Lily by purposefully annoying the heck out of her, we started to learn about how he was secretly planning to present Robin with her locket in an effort to get her back. As it turns out, this wasn’t the moment that Ted intended to give it back, but he had it, and he had seemingly went to Los Angeles to get it.
Is this infuriating? Definitely, and while we don’t blame Ted for being human, him getting the locket to potentially ruin his best bro’s wedding crosses the line into total d-bag behavior. Let’s hope he is talked out of it since if Ted blows this for Barney, we’re not sure he can be redeemed.
