‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 5 spoilers: Paul Wesley teases possible future for Elena, Stefan

Is the relationship between Elena and Stefan over on “The Vampire Diaries”? As you surely know by now, the two parties had a romantic relationship that burned strong during the first three seasons of the show especially, but that started to wither away last year as Elena became sire-bonded to Damon; now, she’s with Ian Somerhalder’s character, while Paul Wesley is forced to play his Salvatore brother as a guy drowning over and over again while his doppelganger in Silas runs amok in Mystic Falls.

Speaking to TV Guide, however, Wesley teases that the love that is between Stefan and Elena has to “always exist.” While it is hard to really figure just what he is specifically talking about here, know that there is a major reveal coming on the show pertaining to a connection that will have them linked together permanently. While this doesn’t meant that they will be getting back together again, it’s certainly a nice start.

The biggest challenge that we imagine Stefan and Elena really having now is getting back to where they were. These two were at one point linked at the hip, and he felt like her protector. Now, he is more of an equal, and he lacks that sort of edge that Damon has unless he is in that violent, uncontrollable ripper mode that made season 3 so entertaining. (We also imagine that it was the favorite for Wesley to play.)
