Is ‘American Idol’ looking for next Phillip Phillips with guitar change?
Well, “American Idol” is not waiting very long at all before trying to pimp out guitar players again on their show, did they? One year after having their lowest ratings (and coronation song sales) ever, the producers are changing things up, and making sure all singer-songwriters know that you can now bring your guitar to some of the auditions.
You can check out the full list of audition cities and dates here, and we don’t really see the guitar change as that drastic a shift at all. Basically, if you want to play the guitar and the producers want to hear you do it, then you’ll get an opportunity; otherwise, you are out of luck.
Obviously, the danger here is that producers may not want another winner who is a good-looking guy with a guitar, but there are plenty of other types of people who also play the instrument. Plus, we’ve learned already from a ratings standpoint that having a winner of this variety is not the worst thing ever, given that it’s what people tune in to watch. We’d personally rather see the show continue with a predictable winner than no show at all, given that all singers who go far on this show benefit from it in some way. Plus, you can’t knock the fact that despite many people writing him off during the season, Phillip has gone on to be the most-successful winner of the show in years. So long as the entire top five is not all guitar strummers this coming year, we don’t have any problem with this.
What do you think about this change to the format, and do you think this is a reactive move to the lack of singer / songwriter types to make it near the end of this past season? (Yes, we know that both Angie Miller and Kree Harrison do fit that mold still.) If you want to read some more news about past contestants, including Adam Lambert and Lee DeWyze, you can do so over here.

But even if you allow the contestants to play guitar, don’t expect to find “Phillip Phillips” every season, it just won’t magically happen. Phillip Phillips is an incredibly talented musician and charismatic performer — there just aren’t that many artists like him out there.

ummm. no. PP is a very LUCKY contestant. He won a “singing” contest when he admits how poor of a singer he is, and was handed a pre-made hit song ‘Home’ that he sang exactly like the original by Greg Holden, and stated that he doesn’t even like the song. He won because he appealed to hormonal girls, not for any musical talent.
He is a *poor* copycat of Dave Matthews – right down to how he holds the guitar and his mannerisms. He has no originality whatsoever – there are thousands of amateurs where Phillips belongs – in the corner of a coffeeshop playing bad covers for tips.
Philips was a face that 19 slapped on the song Home, which they had already planned for marketing before Idol was even done. That is why they sabatoged Jessica Sanchez in the last few shows of the season.
Philips is a one-trick pony, and now that the golden ring he was handed is starting to tarnish, he will fade into one-hit-wonder obscurity. Idol is looking for more cute guitar guys because they are now admitting that Idol stopped being a talent show years ago, and is simply a slobber-fest for teenage girls and cute guy contestants. The reason they made Candice win this year was to counter the lawsuit Idol is fighting by a group of blacks who had been cut before top 24

Well his second single “Gone, Gone, Gone” has gone platinum now and is still rising on the charts. That means 2 hits to-date. Where is your snowflake Jessica Sanchez now?

‘Gone’ has been sinking in the charts. it was never platinum. PP is gone, gone, gone.
Actually, Jessica is doing very well right now. Better than PP ever will.

Haha, funny! Over a year later, and Jessica’s fans are still quite bitter and jealous…
Some facts: Phillip Phillips’s second single “Gone Gone Gone” just gone Platinum. His first album “The World From The Side Of The Moon” is near Platinum.
Phillips is selling huge venues. He toured with Matchbox 20 in February, and he is currently on tour with John Mayer. His performances are incredibly good (just read the comments from people, if you don’t trust my word).
Phillip is going to perform at the World largest rock festival – Rock In Rio – in September, opening for Bruce Springsteen and John Mayer.
It all just proves that people love him, and that the professionals in the music industry see something special in him. Phillips is an amazing live performer and a very talented musician, he is not just a singer. His career is thriving, and his future is bright :))
(As of Jessica, who do you blame for her very poor album and single sales? Is it still AI producers that “sabotage” her? Or do you blame someone else, Phillip maybe? :)

Oh Lord. Phillips college tour just got cancelled because of poor ticket sales. The show he had near me had maybe 200 people show up. His 15 minutes of fame is OVER.
he was nothing but a face they slapped on Holden’s song, nothing more. He was incredibly lucky. The same thing would have happened with that song to any other WGWG they put in the top 10. It was the right Mumford song at the right time, and now that the Mumford phase is waning, so will PP.
You are lying about Jessica as well, She is incredibly successful, and is making more money than PP ever will. She sold out a 15,000 seat arena, has a jam-packed schedule, numerous high-profile magazine shoots, and her album is consistently moving up the US and European charts. It is in the top 10 in many Eastern countries already. She is gearing for a new audience, not the same audience she had on Idol, so it takes a while to do that.

Looks like you are lying intentionally. Are you that angry?
Phillip had to POSTPONE (not cancel) a few SOLD OUT (!!!) college dates due to his health issues. All these dates have been RIGHT AWAY re-scheduled for November.
I wish your Jessica all the success, she does have a great voice. She may be successful in Asia. But so far in the US her sales are very-very low, and even Glee didn’t help that. She may be making good money by modeling and appearing here and there, and if that makes her and you happy, good for you!

You are making things up, or are parroting rumours again.
He CANCELLED the college tour because the tickets were not selling. People would not go just to see PP unless there was another band he was warming up for. Were you at the idol tour? People would regularly leave during PPs set because he is just so boring to watch. He cannot maintain a live audience by himself. I think that rumour you are parroting started on Twitter.

And the reason why he cancelled his tour it’s because of his health issues..His cancelled concerts were already rescheduled..check the facts before posting stories created only by your hallucinated condition..

And you BELIEVE that? ROFL. This is from the same 19 mgmt company who said the 2013 idol tour cancelled all those shows bcause of “scheduling ” reasons – when they weren’t selling any tickets either.

OMG!, Jessica’s fans are getting worst..such hallucinated fans..tsk tsk tsk..It seems that u haven’t read the updates about Jessica and Phillip’s career..Jessica Sanchez is already on the list of underrated artists of 2013..her debut album flopped and even her solo concert in the Philippines is reportedly flopped!..Phillip?well, his single gone gone gone just turned platinum and his debut album is about to become platinum…Don’t give the BS that Phillip got a better album promotion than Jessica..Just accept the fact that Phillip is a million better than Jessica that’s why he has larger fanbase…

I don’t see any problem with letting them play the instrument if they want to. If that’s the kind of a musician they want to be, why don’t you let them do their thing right on the show, and make the audience know them for what they are? If the audience like what they see on the show, they will buy their music after.

Because it is a singing show. Hiding behind the guitar and flashing cute dimples is how we end up with the likes of Kris Allen and Lee Dewhatshisname

No, it’s “The Voice” that was designed to be purely a SINGING show… “American Idol” is not JUST a singing show! It’s a search of a next American Idol, which includes much more than just singing — it’s about charisma, personality, style, talent, and more.
Moonbattery
July 11, 2013 @ 3:08 pm
No, idol is / was a singing show. Simon left and the ratings tanked after it stopped being a singing show. All it is now is a popularity contest for horny teenage girls and cougars. because all the talent went away, so did the audience.
Moonbattery
July 11, 2013 @ 3:10 pm
Note: The Voice now has a bigger audience. People WANT the singing contest to remain. When Idol started handing non-singers like Lee Dewyze and PP the “title”, their ratings started tanking and going over to the Voice.

I wonder if until when will you stop making excuses for Jessica’s failure and Phillip’s success?
Moonbattery
July 18, 2013 @ 1:36 am
Failure? Boy, are you vindictive and nasty. Jessica Sanchez to date is earning FAR more $$$ than PP. Her schedule has been jam-packed, her album is topping the charts internationally, she sold out a 15,000 seat arena for her first solo concert, and has done major magazine covers and TV spots non-stop. I think you are the one making up some pretty vile stories about Jessica Sanchez. What’s your beef with her success? Nervous about something?
