‘Arrow’ season 2 spoilers: How to keep the Oliver / Laurel romance interesting
When “Arrow” season 2 picks up with new episodes on Wednesday, October 9, there is going to be one major question you have to ask when it comes to the Oliver / Laurel relationship: Are these two people going to be able to stay together? One of the issues that they face is that Oliver had made a mission our of keeping Laurel at arm’s length the entire time that he wore the famous hood, if for no other reason than that her being outed as Oliver Queen’s boyfriend puts an immediate target on her back. Therefore, it’s feasible that now that Tommy’s death has caused him realize the importance of his role in society, he may end things with Laurel and focus his life solely on fighting crime.
Speaking in a new interview with Comic Book Resources, executive producer Marc Guggenheim explains that there is a challenge when it comes to keeping this relationship fresh and realistic, especially from a television perspective more so than whatever actual feelings that the two parties genuinely have for each other:
“I think any time you do a TV show, and you’ve got two people together who are star-crossed lovers and they’re destined to be together, but you don’t want them together because you run into the ‘Moonlighting’ problem of your two main characters, once they actually end up together, in a committed relationship, then it seems to lose all of its sexual spark.The little magic trick that we have to do with Oliver and Laurel is, keep bringing them together and pulling them apart, bringing them together and pulling them apart.”
To make matters all the more complicated, we know that there are also a contingent of people who are not necessarily rooting for Oliver and Laurel right now to work things out, including all of those people shipping him with Felicity Smoak (which we also are part of, at least to an extent so long as it doesn’t hurt the relationship that is already there).
