‘Doctor Who’ season 8: Check out some ‘auditions’ for the 12th Doctor

While there were some pretty intense rumors coming out last week all about who could be playing the part of the 12th Doctor on “Doctor Who,” this weekend has been far quieter on the casting front. To us, this largely just means one thing: no announcement is particularly imminent, so the producers are focusing more instead on actually getting this right.

While you wait for some true contenders to emerge, perhaps the following will be a nice way to whet your whistle. A new video focusing on some of the “contenders” (if you can call them that) for the role. Since the show actually films in Cardiff, the folks over at Wales Online got together a video featuring some of their residents making their best attempts to try to land the role of the iconic character.

So do any of these people have a real shot? Let’s put it this way: They are about as likely to pick up the role as we are to suddenly have the TARDIS appear in our house. The irony here is that producers could choose someone to be The Doctor who does not have that much more of an exciting resume since there’s a benefit to getting lesser-known actors in that it motivates them to really make the best of the part, and they also may decide to stick around a little bit longer. Matt Smith at least stayed with the series for three years, and did some lovely work in the process (including the great arc with Jenna-Louise Coleman earlier this spring).
