‘Orphan Black’ season 1, episode 9 review: Is Helena a clone or the original?
“Orphan Black” continues to find ways to surprise and delight us each week, especially when it comes to the character of Helena. We were quick to just write her off as a crazy person when we first met her, but as we get deeper into the show we find ourselves falling more and more in love with her and her feral ways.
On this week’s episode of “Orphan Black” we learned a lot more about Helena, with the major plot twist being that she is Sarah’s twin sister (now we know why Helena was convinced they had a “connection”). We also met the surrogate that carried Sarah and Helena as she explained that the people she was carrying the twins for were scientists and not actual parents (making Helena and Sarah both clones), so she separated them and was able to hide them well enough that neither child was found until now, where the other clones have been monitored for years.
As for the other clones, Alison and Felix have become pretty close as he helps her deal with an intervention organized by her monitor, while Cosima confronts Delphine about snooping on her. Delphine tries to say that she’s actually fallen for Cosima (could this be true? Maybe, but probably not) and Cosima throws her out of her apartment (and hopefully her life). We really didn’t understand why Cosima allowed this monitor so close to her without using her to get information for herself, but sometimes we are blinded by love (or in this case lust).
The really crazy thing about this whole episode was that after Kira’s traumatic accident, she was completely fine, not a broken bone, not anything, much to the confusion of the doctors (and us). Is there something special about Kira that stops her from getting hurt or even possibly dying? Does her mother have these same powers? We don’t know yet, but it’s likely to be explored as we move into season 2.
The “Orphan Black” season 1 finale will be airing on June 1st at 9 p.m. on BBC America and with only one episode left we still have so many questions that will likely still be unanswered as we move into season 2. As frustrating as that will be, don’t we love a show that keeps us wanting more?
