Is George Lopez the next Charlie Sheen? Actor signs ‘Anger Management’-type deal
While George Lopez may not have some of the tabloid headlines that Charlie Sheen does, the two actors now have one significant thing in common: they are each in business with FX for experimental programs that could make them millions upon millions of dollars.
When it comes to Lopez, his series is entitled “St. George,” and he plays a wealthy entrepreneur who is looking to balance out what is a frantic business life with his family, including his mother deciding to move in with his wife and children. In addition to all of this, he also teaches a night class to give back to his community. Like Sheen and “Two and a Half Men,” this is Lopez’s first major foray into sitcoms since “George Lopez” aired on ABC years ago.
This show is being put on by Lionsgate and its distribution partner Debmar-Mercury, and the show ultimately has the same exact production model as Sheen’s “Anger Management” did straight out of the gate. The good news for it is that the series will be ordered for ten episodes, and then there is an option for 90 more to be ordered if it meets a certain ratings threshold. We don’t know if the number will be the same as it was with Sheen, mostly because that show did not exactly ever disclose just what the threshold was.
Do we think that this could be a success? Ultimately, “St. George” may have a tougher road that “Anger Management.” While Lopez is more accomplished as a comedian, his last show in late-night talk show “Lopez Tonight” was canceled following its move to midnight. Meanwhile, Sheen had a large amount of interest here thanks to his very-public dismissal from “Two and a Half Men,” and while he received the 90-episode pickup, recent “Anger Management” ratings have hardly been worth getting excited about.
