‘Glee’ season 4, episode 18 review: Chord Overstreet shines, and is [spoiler] gone?

GleeIf there is one word that we can use to describe Thursday night’s “Glee” episode, it was emotional, and for a variety of different reasons. There was heartbreak, terror, loss, and also genuine character development. Even though there was no Rachel, Kurt, or Santana in the entire hour, it still has to be considered one of the most powerful episodes of the show’s entire run.

First, let’s get to the standout performers from the hour. While you may not like the Brittany / Sam pairing, Chord Overstreet showed some of the best skills that he ever has since joining the show. The writers finally figured out this year what to do with this character, and it shows through almost every single scene. It was ultimately hard to not feel shattered when he and Brittany were separated from each other during the shooting, and to have the two learn something about what being a couple really means (including not obsessing over Lord Tubbington).

Also notable in this episode? Jane Lynch. For at least a good ten minutes here, we genuinely felt that Sue Sylvester was the person responsible for actually setting off the gun; however, it was instead Becky. Lauren Potter was absolutely heartbreaking here, as it turned out that Becky brought the gun to school in her anger and confusion that the real world would eat her alive. Sue ultimately took the fall in order to protect her longtime student, and we’re sure that there will be debate over this for a long time as to whether or not this was the right move. From one standpoint, you can say that she was really trying to help someone who did not mean to hurt anyone; but isn’t a move like this one that requires that Becky receives a greater amount of help? Sue taking the fall doesn’t really solve the problem, but it was a particularly sad way to end the hour, even more so than seeing poor catfish victim Ryder once again be left in the dust.
