‘Bates Motel’ episode 3 preview: Remember, it’s still around…

Bates MotelWe almost feel bad for “Bates Motel” right now in a sense. Why? If this show was coming on in the summer, Freddie Highmore and company would probably be the belle of the ball. However, they are coming on the spring, a time in which there is an abundance of other noteworthy programming out there included “Game of Thrones,” “Mad Men,” the recent end to “The Walking Dead,” “Orphan Black” over on BBC America, “The Good Wife,” and so much more. It’s a tough time to be noticed.

Nonetheless, the first two episodes of this show were pretty darn sensational, and were lifted up by Highmore and Vera Farmiga’s terrific performances. Is this show creepy? Beyond so, and there were some scenes from the first two episodes (including Norman watching his mother change in front of him) that we would prefer to never see again.

However, if the goal of executive producer Carlton Cuse is to in fact confuse and disarm you, it’s certainly working. This is one of the eeriest shows on TV now that “American Horror Story” is over for the year, and it often manages that rare feat of creeping you out when it doesn’t even do anything altogether creepy. As a matter of fact, the moments when the show is at its worst are when it is explicit. (One scene from the pilot immediately comes to mind, which took the shock value up to another level.)

So watch the promo below for Monday night’s new “Bates Motel,” and give it a shot if you haven’t already. There’s not enough of the horror / suspense genre out there, and it’s also a pretty interesting take on a character that takes him beyond Alfred Hitchcock.
