‘Dancing with the Stars 16’ spotlight: Sean Lowe and Peta Murgatroyd
We’re going to have some smaller “Dancing with the Stars” spotlight pieces coming up this weekend to prepare you for Monday night’s premiere, but before we come to that, it only seems appropriate that we take a look at someone who has certainly received plenty of buzz as of the past few days: Sean Lowe.
Going into this season, there is no one on the cast riding a larger wave of publicity. Thanks to “The Bachelor” finale, Sean’s face is on the front cover of every tabloid under the sun, and his relationship with Catherine Giudici is currently celebrated by fans everywhere. (We’re sure that it is only a matter of time before these same magazines try to destroy it, but that’s neither here nor there.)
The one thing that we’ll say about Sean before really breaking anything down is that he has a definite chance to go far, at least based on the fact that the fans will keep him safe for the first few weeks. After that, it’s up to whether or not he is a good dancer.
Partner – Peta Murgatroyd. Peta has won the show with Donald Driver, and made it far with Gilles Marini. Therefore, she’s a good person to help Sean figure out what it takes to be successful. She’s also one of the more intense pros, which may be a nice balance to his goofy sense of humor.
Strengths – Let’s start with the obvious: the ladies love him, and he’ll get a ton of votes any time he takes the shirt off. He came across better on “The Bachelor” than almost any leading man they have ever had, and save for a few comments from AshLee Frazier, his reputation is pretty unscathed. He’ll have a huge fanbase that just helped Melissa Rycroft win, and he’s also athletic enough to handle the routines.
Weaknesses – We don’t know if Sean has any rhythm at all, and this is on a season where you have football players (who tend to fare well) and people whose day jobs are to be entertainers. Sean’s never been a performer on this stage, so this transition will probably be harder on him than most of the other cast. The biggest problem many non-entertainers have is coming across as stiff.
Prediction – Sean’s almost a lock for at least the final six, unless he comes out and is the second coming of The Situation. If he can actually dance, he’s got a chance to win without even being necessarily the strongest of the season thanks to his fans. We’re still putting Aly Raisman at the top of the leaderboard, but he and Jacoby Jones are ones to watch.
